CBD is known for its array of healthy beneficial properties, and all of these benefits are widely known now.
More than 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections occur in the U.S. alone each year, and more than 35,000 people die as a result. These numbers sounded the alarm about the danger of antimicrobial resistance. The overuse of antibiotics has caused bacteria to evolve and become resistant to previously effective treatments.
That is why the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation led the development of the 2020-2025 National Action Plan, released in 2015, organized around five goals for collaborative action by the U.S. Government in partnership with foreign governments, individuals, and organizations. One of the main goals is to slow the emergence of resistant bacteria and prevent the spreading of resistant infections worldwide.
The good news is that recent research has shed light on the antibacterial properties of CBD and other cannabis compounds.
Common Conditions Caused by Bacterial Infection:
Millions of bacteria and germs live in our body, and believe it or not, there are countless benefits to humans provided by microbes, helping to improve our immune system. On the other hand, the bacteria help in the protection against the pathogens that try to enter our body, serving as a defensive shield. And our bodies are smart enough to quickly recognize when some of those bacteria, harmful to our health, are in our bodies.
Common conditions caused by harmful bacteria include:
- Food Poisoning
- Staphylococcus (staph infection)
- Escherichia coli (E. coli)
- STDs (i.e., gonorrhea)
- Bacterial Meningitis
- Respiratory Tract Infections
These conditions are most commonly treated with antibiotics medications. The rise and everyday use of these medicaments have caused a surge of the “superbugs” resistant to these medications. The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is one of the biggest threats to global health.
CBD and its Antibacterial Properties
Recent research published by Nature complements several other recent reports demonstrating CBD’s antibiotic potential. The study found CBD effective against a diverse range of over 20 different types of bacteria, including several drug-resistant strains and the sometimes difficult-to-treat family of Gram-negative bacteria.
Also, another study has found that cannabinoids were as effective or more effective at killing MRSA, one of the deadliest known forms of bacteria encountered by physicians, that does not respond to many antibiotics and can spread through the body causing life-threatening infections.
The results of these studies indicate that CBD has proven to be effective at fighting several strains of bacteria, including the most resistant ones. Many people are now using CBD to treat different diseases caused by bacteria. It can be a natural cure for a wide range of infections caused by various types of bacteria.
Research has shown that CBD and other cannabis compounds present significant antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the cannabinoids in the plant may work together to provide antibacterial properties that can help treat several diseases and conditions. It is worth mentioning that these studies were conducted in labs (in test tubes and on bacteria cultures) and not on human subjects. Researchers still do not know what made CBD powerful at fighting infections during the experiments. However, the results of the studies demonstrating CBD’s antibiotic properties are especially exciting for the CBD community.
